How to Pack Like a Pro for Air Travel When You Are Used to Your RV

If you’re used to the freedom of the open road in your RV, the thought of air travel might feel a little… confining. No pantry full of snacks, no closet within arm’s reach, and no cozy corner you can call your own. But sometimes, the skies call. Whether it’s for a quick family visit, a business trip, or an adventure overseas. Switching from RV life to airline travel means downsizing your packing list, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or convenience. With the right approach, you can pack light, stay organized, and still feel prepared for takeoff. Let’s dive into some smart packing tips, must-have travel essentials, and a free printable checklist designed especially for women on the go to ensure you don’t forget anything you need.

Packing Light: Why Less Is More

Traveling light isn’t just trendy—it’s practical. Fewer bags mean less to keep track of, fewer baggage fees, and easier mobility through airports and transit. However, if you are like me, you tend to be an overpacker. Let’s look at some ideas to keep you focused on what you need so you aren’t weighed down at the airport.

Here’s how to lighten your load:

1. Start with the Right Bag

  • Choose a lightweight carry-on set with wheels that fits most airline size limits. This set comes in various colors. If you aren’t checking a bag, this is the set I use. I pack the essentials in the suitcase and duffle. I put the suitcase in the overhead bin and place the duffle with my purse tucked inside under the seat in front of me. Most airlines will only allow you to have two bags. If you are checking a bag, this set can be purchased in larger sets.

  • Another option for a personal item is this travel backpack. If you are taking a short trip, it can also work for your only option for luggage if you are a smart packer. I love it for the space it offers. I pack my makeup, essentials, a day or two worth of clothing, and my medication inside this and use it as my carry-on. There is still plenty of room for my technology and book.

2. Pack Outfits, Not Pieces

  • Think in terms of outfits, not individual items.

  • Choose neutral tones that mix and match easily.

  • Limit shoes to 2–3 versatile pairs (1 casual, 1 dressy, 1 comfy walking shoe). If you know these things won’t be needed on the trip, don’t pack it. Shoes weigh a lot and are bulky. They can take up a lot of valuable space in your bag.

  • If you know you will be visiting the national Parks and hiking, don’t throw in a dress “just in case.”

3. Use Packing Cubes

  • These are game changers! They help compress your clothes and keep your suitcase organized.

4. Roll, Don’t Fold

  • Rolling your clothes saves space and reduces wrinkles.

5. Wear It Again

  • Pack items that you can wear to multiple locations on your trip.
  • Wear clothing like denim, shorts, skirts, and T-shirts more than once.
  • Rinse clothing out in the sink if you need to, using these handy sink laundry tablets (lifesavers).
  • Clean small spots off of clothing with a Tide pen if needed.

Consider Weight and Bulk

Packing and what you take with you is personal to each of us. We don’t want to be without the things we love and that make us comfortable. But you do want to consider that you will be lugging all your belongings in and out of vehicles, through the airport, and in hotel lobbies and elevators.

Final Tips

To ensure a smooth flight, make sure you follow these tips before you leave the house.

Before you go…

  • Check airline baggage policies before you pack.

  • Weigh your bag at home to avoid overweight fees.

  • Pack an empty tote or foldable bag for souvenirs.

  • Always bring an extra pair of underwear and basic toiletries in your carry-on in case your checked bag is delayed.

  • If you are checking a bag, make sure your medications and makeup are with you in the cabin inside your carry-on.
  • Ensure your toiletries have met the liquid TSA requirements.
