Access

The campground is easy to access via the I-5.

  • If you’re traveling on I-5, take the McCloud exit (Exit 736), which is about 9 miles east of Mount Shasta.
  • After exiting, follow CA-89 East towards McCloud.
  • Continue on CA-89 for about 9 miles until you reach the town of McCloud.
  • The resort is located just a short distance from downtown McCloud. Watch for signs or input the address into your GPS for precise directions.

If you are coming from Lassen National Park or Burney Falls just take CA-89.

  • Exit Lassen Volcanic National Park:
    • Leave the park by heading west on CA-89 North (also known as the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway).
  • Continue on CA-89 North:
    • Stay on CA-89 North for approximately 70 miles. This scenic route will take you through beautiful forested areas and past several small towns.
  • Approach McCloud:
    • As you continue on CA-89 North, you’ll pass through the town of Bartle and eventually reach the town of McCloud.
  • Arrive at McCloud RV Resort:
    • The resort is located just off CA-89 in McCloud. Follow signs or use GPS for the final approach.

Atmosphere

The park backs up to the CA-89 so the campground stays fairly noisy from the highway noise. There are a lot of semi trucks and large profile vehicles that travel this road at early hours. We didn’t spend a lot of time in the campground because we were off exploring and hiking during the day. When we were in the park, it was quiet even though there were a lot of people there. The park was not at capacity but it was close to being full.

Environment

Sites are on gravel with small patches of grass that the owners were very concerned about during the summer. In the morning they would enter your site and turn on the sprinklers which was frustrating because the water would hit your rig and flood your space. This made packing up to leave difficult. I found it incredibly rude.

Since the sites are gravel leveling was easy. We stayed in site 93, which stated earlier was very close to the highway. When we arrived to our site after hours, in the dark, there were additional picnic tables and sprinklers in our site we had to rearrange before we could park. Again, I found this rude since we were trying to be respectful of others in the campground but had to make noise to rearrange the campsite to even be able to back in with the clutter that was left there.

The campsites are all in open spaces and do not have any privacy screening. I did not see one site that had fencing or shrubbery that offered privacy from your neighbor. In the center of the park some tall trees offered shade. However, on the outer sites, there were no trees and not a lot of shade.

There is a small stream that runs through the park that kids would love.

Surrounding Area

McCloud RV Resort is located in McCloud, California, a very small town. There are a few gas stations, Floyd’s Frosty, and a pizza place close to the campground if it is open. McCloud’s downtown area is filled with historic buildings, many of which date back to the town’s days as a thriving logging community. You can explore antique shops, boutique stores, and local eateries that reflect the town’s heritage.

The town of Shata is about an hour’s drive and it has a great city park that boasts “healing” waters and the famous Yaks restaurant.

Lassen National Park is about an hour and half drive. Near there you can find the Subway Cave (it’s FREE!).

Burney Falls is about a 45-minute drive east on the way to Lassen National Park. Part of the hiking trail that runs through the park is connected to the Pacific Crest Trail.

McCloud Falls parking lot is just minutes from the campground. There are 3 falls you can look at. Most of the trail is shaded so if it is a warm day you can manage to stay out of the sun for most of the hike. People picnic and use all of the falls as a swimming hole.

As you can see, McCloud is very centrally located to many sight-seeing attractions.

Favorite Thing

My favorite thing about his campground was its location to everything I wanted to see and do. We stayed here for two nights and we were able to do and see everything listed above, including go to Shasta and fill up our water jugs with the water from Mount Shata. I do not know if it cured anything that ailed us, but it did taste good and made some great iced tea. Yes, we drank it and survived.

If I Could Change One Thing…

If the park were in a different location with less noise it would make for a better experience. Also, some privacy from your neighbor would be nice. Fencing to separate you from your neighbor or shrubs to give a sense of privacy would make the camping experience better at this park.
