Covering Your Motorhome

When we recently decided to purchase our new Winnebago Minnie Winnie 26T, I immediately began searching for a great cover. I wanted to make sure that I was ready for the day I took delivery of the coach so that I could put the cover on as we soon as we reached our driveway. For me it has never been a question of whether or not I should cover my rig. A motorhome is a substantial investment and covering it is a great way to protect that investment from the elements. Also, I want to keep it in great shape in case I have to sell it in the future. That said, I often drive past outdoor storage facilities filled with uncovered RVs and trailers. So ultimately, it is a personal preference.

Motorhome cover, front half

Our last coach was a Class A Fleetwood Bounder. We had an ADCO cover, which was pretty solid. However it eventually began to rip and fray, especially under windier conditions. This time around I wanted to go in a different direction. After a bit of research I decided to go with the KING BIRD cover. We have had it for about a month so far and I am really happy with it. I’d love to go through a few things that may be helpful to you as you are thinking about covers for your Class C motorhome.

Things To Know

The first thing you need to know is the actual length of your motorhome. For example, our 26T measures 28.5 feet in length. The KING BIRD covers come in four lengths: 20-23′, 23-26′, 26-29′, and 29-32′. Technically my measurements fit in the 26-29′ category, but I decided to size up to the 29-32′ model. And I’m really glad I did. The extra slack comes in really handy when I’m putting on and taking off the cover.

The KING BIRD cover is easy to unbox and it even comes with wheel coverings, which is nice. I would definitely say that putting on and taking off the cover is a 2-person job. The trickiest part, in my opinion, is getting the cover up to the roof. What we do is work from the back of the coach, using two ladders to hoist the cover on to the roof. From there I climb up to the roof and unravel the cover. I look for the KING BIRD logo, which goes in the front. Then I make sure that the inside material is facing down. It is easy to tell by looking at the material which part is the underside. Once I have my orientation figured out, it literally goes on to the RV like a bed sheet. It even has bunched corners like a bed sheet, which allows it to hug each corner of the motorhome.

My Favorite Features

This cover has a few features that I really like. First, there are a few vertical zippers on each side. This allows me to access the living area or the cab at any time without having to remove the cover. Second, there are straps on all sides that can be tightened as needed on windy days or for an extra snug fit. Third, there are four-wheel coverings that give the tires extra protection from the sun.

In Summary

All things considered, I am very happy with this cover so far. It only takes about 5 to 10 minutes to put it on or take it off. The cover is large but it is not terribly hard to maneuver. And I don’t dread working with it, which is always good. What cover do you use? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
